Ian’s interest in nature photography came about when he and Shelagh booked a holiday to Zambia and Malawi in 2005. Inspired by a fellow student who had produced superb images with modest equipment on a similar trip 30 years previously, he took the plunge into digital and invested in a canon 10D and a couple of lenses. He was immediately impressed by the freedom of the digital age and the outstanding image quality that seemed possible. Slowly, he upgraded the gear, but more importantly, joined a forum based group of very helpful nature photographers (Nature Photographers Network) whose critique was of immense value in his quest to improve the quality of his shots. He still sees himself on the lower slopes of the learning curve of nature photography.

His particular interest is in birds, mainly local ones, but he is also keen to explore every facet of UK wildlife. Currently, he is still working full-time as a GP so many of his aspirations will have to wait for a few years before they can come to fruition. He looks forward to a new “career” when retirement arrives. He is about to embark on a new project - to raise money for medical charities by selling some of his images through his surgery.
